Review Round Up
Mark Delaney – GameSpot
“For a game in development for more than a decade, it’s a minor miracle for Dead Island 2 to come out at all. The fact that it’s arrived in such a state that players can have fun with it for the duration of its story and beyond–even as that story itself is an afterthought–is a testament to the team that got it to a once-unlikely finish line.
Along with the lacklustre story, poor gunplay and some balancing issues hurt Dead Island 2, but its deep melee combat systems and rich setting make it a better game than the original, which is maybe the most important thing I can say about it after everything it’s been through”
VERDICT – 7 / 10
Jordan Middler – VGC
“Dead Island 2 is an extremely silly, comically violent, and consistently enjoyable experience. It’s almost impossible to stop smiling while playing, such are the slapstick laughs of limbs flying off in every direction.
The smart skill system and a wide range of weapons mean that throughout the game’s brisk 15-hour main campaign offering, you’re never bored of liberating heads from the shoulders of the undead around Hollywood.
LA itself is a wonderful playground of varied locations, and though we’d have preferred a fully open world, if the trade-off is the exceptional flesh system, then it’s no contest”
VERDICT – 4 / 5
Wesley LeBlanc – Gameinformer
“With Dead Island 2 behind me, I’m thrilled Dambuster Studios could take something we first learned about way back in 2014 and successfully bring it across the finish line with its own take on the series’ vision.
Dead Island 2 plays, looks, and sounds like a B-movie horror comedy from the 1990s, and the team leans into that full bore with its systems. At the core of this game is zombie destruction, and Dead Island 2 features both plenty of systems with which to engage in it and plenty of zombies to destroy.”
Its serviceable story does just enough to move slayers across Los Angeles’ postcard locations at a brisk pace, and I appreciate how much side content is available within them to keep each visit entertaining.
This game won’t stay with me long, but I’m not sure it was meant to. With Dead Island 2, Dambuster Studios asks little of the player – only that you enjoy a good excuse to kill zombies in increasingly gory ways for a weekend or two – and in doing so, it delivers on the promise of what this series is all about.”
VERDICT – 7.75 / 10
Travis Northup – IGN
“Dead Island 2 is a hysterical Los Angeles-infused satire that does most things well enough, but feels like a stroll down the Walk of Fame of celebrated zombie games I’ve already played without adding many new ideas of its own. In fact, aside from the stellar comedy bits, I can think of very few things that Dead Island 2 does better than last year’s Dying Light 2.
Still, if you’ve ever wanted to put your Wolverine claws straight through a zombie’s face or knock someone’s head off with a golf club, Dead Island 2’s got you. Its blood-soaked melee combat and memorable characters are a lot of fun, especially when accompanied by friends in co-op multiplayer.
The somewhat generic crafting weapons and upgrading your skills as you lay waste to armies of spray-tanned undead is entertaining enough on its own, but the strong writing and completely irreverent tone are the true stars of the show.”
VERDICT – 7 / 10
Dalton Cooper – GameRant
“Dead Island 2 is primarily focused on up-close melee combat, with players able to outfit themselves with everything from electrified Wolverine claws to acidic golf clubs that can make the skin literally melt off zombies’ bones. Dead Island 2 has its fair share of guns as well, but they aren’t nearly as effective as melee weapons.
Guns in Dead Island 2 usually don’t do enough damage, even when upgraded, and what’s worse is that the gun controls are sometimes delayed or outright unresponsive. If players pull the triggers too fast, they can find themselves in a situation where their character shoots, pauses, aims down the sights, does nothing, and shoots again, in a manner in which it seems like the game is struggling to keep up with the player’s input. Guns in Dead Island 2 can be useful in specific situations, but they are not recommended.
It is certainly not without its issues, but Dead Island 2 is a fun co-op game that lets players dropkick zombies, and there’s something to say for mindless fun like that. It suffers from some major jank and needs a few patches to iron out its more serious issues, but those that enjoy looter games and are looking for a fun co-op game to sink their teeth into should consider giving it a look when it’s on sale”
Dead Island is scores on Metacritic 75 (PC) | 76 Xbox Series X|S | 73 PS5
